Since relocating to Byron Bay from Melbourne a few years ago I naturally had to take up surfing around the beautiful beaches to be a true local. Soon I discovered there was an incredible relationship with the organic food as medicine I have been creating for over a decade and the need for healthy, nourishing, restorative food for surfers. Not to mention a niche market which I have created my signature Surf Spa Food, formally launched at an inaugural surf retreat in May.
I was blessed to be working within the most beautiful villa I have ever had the pleasure of and surrounded by gorgeous, enthusiastic and hungry surfer girls from around the world. Daily delights such as the pictured Citrus Polenta Pancakes with a honey blossom yoghurt were a hit, so too were the Spicy Sweetheart Fishcakes and the all important post surf pick-me-up Surf Spa Food signature Bali Bliss Balls with coconut, vanilla, tamarind and tropical fruit.

Pose in Bali
Janine Hall isn’t the first mid-30s executive to decide there is more to life than a career that demands a 24/7 commitment. But she may be the first to decide the antidote to her mid-life crisis is to run off to Bali and set up a surfing and yoga retreat for women called Surf Haven Bali.
“I figured there had to be women like me who felt totally burnt out and wanted to just get away from everything and hang out with their friends,” says Hall, a New Zealander whose fashion marketing career had necessitated stints living in London, Sydney and Tokyo.
Hall had loved Bali since childhood visits, so it wasn’t difficult to pick a location. The yoga and surfing combination seemed a good fit with today’s women and with Bali, she says.
“Lots of women are really into yoga and I decided to add the surfing element because of where we are situated and also it’s a challenge that is totally refreshing,” Hall says.
She also wanted quality accommodation. “You get to a point in life where you don’t want to share bathrooms or stay in bunks.” Consequently, guests stay at two luxury four-bedroom villas at the resort in Seminyak.
Hall has employed the Australian nutritionist and award-winning restaurateur, Samantha Gowing, to design the menu with a view to using local produce and maximising health benefits. “We did surveys and found that nutrition is uppermost in our guests’ wish list,” she says.
Gowing turned the Grace Darling Hotel into one of Melbourne’s first gastro pubs during the 1990s. She now runs Gowings Food Health Wealth, a successful nutrition and well-being business in Byron Bay, as well as consulting to the spa industry, here and internationally.
The seven-day retreats each month are limited to eight women. Packages including accommodation, 15 hours of surfing tuition (with instructors trained by the Australian Surf Industry Training) daily yoga and meditation classes, three hours of spa treatments, all meals, a full-day Bali tour and airport transfers, are priced from $2311, twin share.

I have recently returned from two weeks in Bali – one which I spent at a new surf and yoga retreat for women – Surf Haven Bali. I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect given it was new and had recently opened but from the moment I arrived at the airport to scented cold refresher towels and the smiling Retreat Director Deb, I was in heaven!
The retreat villa itself is gorgeous – its huge with loads of chill out space and the rooms are great, modern, quiet and cool. They are all spread out around the grounds so you really feel like you have your own space and privacy. It comes with alot of staff and was great to be waited on by the butlers – I felt very spoilt and pampered.
A real highlight was all the food which was amazing and the resident Chef Sam whipped up one great meal after another – would have loved more desert though! It was so much fun learning to surf with others who had never tried before either and so great to actually be able to prove to myself (and friends) that I can stand up on a board!! I am definately going to do more over summer as I LOVED it! The yoga (vinyasa flow) was fabulous and taught by an awesome women from San Fran. Coming on holiday by myself it was great to join a group. The women who run it (Jen and Deb) and the women I met were amazing and really made my experience one I will always remember – I loved my week there and would recommend it to anyone wanting some time out to get away from it all, learn to surf and do yoga and truly be looked after. I am going to return next year!!

My favourite part of the coaching process is watching the “A Ha” face light up! It is often preceded by a squeamish look of discomfort, hand rolling and the occasional head scratch in an attempt to mask the doubt, fear and confusion.
Then the illumination kicks in.
Have you ever had a moment like this?
What I discovered recently is that many practices are run on hope and history. Often having no systems in place to increase the number of patients or to improve the number of enquiries into the practice. Just relying on word of mouth, an occasional practitioner referral and a ‘trusted’ directory ad.
More rusty than trusty I dared to suggest!
By implementing the 5 Simple Steps to Grow a clients’ business, the process of systemising their practice allows for its growth by increasing fees to reflect their experience as the principal practitioner and business owner. By increasing the average transaction value or average fee, they are then able to forecast what the next 90 days will look like and therefore project turnover.
Within weeks of this action plan one of our clients put on two additional practitioners and created a tiered fee structure. This will not just maintain turnover in the clinic while the principal practitioner takes an extensive leave of absence, but will exponentially grow the business so it can become fully operational, systemised practice.
The most exciting thing to watch was how many of our clients move from a “practitioner mindset” toward the mindset of an entrepreneur by looking at the idea of What is Possible.

What an incredible year it’s been! I found myself in transition more often than not this year and now that the end is nigh I can sit back and reflect on the good the bad and the not so ugly.
What I have learned the most is how our own ‘story’ in our head dictates and contributes directly to the outcome of our actions. Changing our belief system and thought programming can be tough but without the breakdown of the old patterns, new breakthroughs simply cannot occur.
So hit the ground running in the New Year by setting your intention now.
Here’s some mindset motivators to get you on your way.
- Begin with the end in mind. Visualise the end result of what you desire and then put it down on paper
- Change is uncomfortable. Identify the Problem, Create a Solution, Ride the short term Pain and the Pleasure will Unfold
- Upgrade your Circle of Influence. Take a good look at who surrounds you. I call it the Budgie Mirror view!
- Write yourself a business plan – even if you are not in business, take the time to write down where you see yourself this time next year
- Eat more fat. Nuts, seeds, avocados, deep sea fish – all help to reduce inflammation and build brain cells
- Eat less acid. Reduce your grain intake and eat more carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato and alkalising seeds such as quinoa
- Acknowledge the patterns that create resistance in your life – are you caught up in your own story?
- Reduce your debt – get yourself a debt recovery program and reduce the interest you are paying
- Acknowledge your fears and frustrations – what is truly going on when you sit for a moment and take stock? Are your fears unfounded?
- Be nicer to yourself – write down ten fabulous things you are or did
My Vision
To radiate global awareness as a Motivational Mentor who empowers others by cultivating an effective motivational mindset to create the power of positive energy as a nurturing and vital healing force to reunite family, restore community and renew planetary health.
The Kneeling Feeling
Over a week ago I fractured my patella in a nasty fall at work. Having spent a year in rehab in the past I was very distraught to have broken another bone in my right leg. I knew that with enough rest, ice elevation and most importantly a powerful positive mindset I would soon be up and walking slowly.
The consulting quack at the local hospital announced that my recovery would be up to 12 weeks of leg up, ice, rest and full leg brace. Tears, frustration and despair unfolded.
My friendly South Melbourne Osteopath and colleague Dr. George Michael offered a phone diagnosis of a 3-4 week recovery and a patella stabilizer bandage, lots of boron, fish oil and massage to stimulate proprioception especially of the quadriceps so as to reduce atrophy or muscle wasting.
Then a local Osteopath rang to say to take the patella stabilizer off, get moving, weight-bear and start bending the knee a little and I should be right in a week or two but with no intense training.
This morning I am drug free, pain free and cane free. My knee is a bit sore from the tightness of swelling and minimal movement which is better for arnica and ice, but that’s it (for today anyway)!
The healing kneeling feeling and power of positive thinking strikes again!
So have a safe, healthy and happy Christmas and kick up you heels with a right, royal knees up on New Years Eve.
