Clare Bowditch Sings Sam’s Praises

“I had the good fortune of stumbling across Sam Gowing back in 2002, when she gave me a jolly-good dose of both Pilates and “food as medicine” advice. Since then, whenever I’m run down, flat out, over-roasted, or in need to some professional “energy support”, she is the one I call. She always sets me back on the path to good health, and manages to do so in a way that makes food sexy, and exercise delightful. She has a big heart, and this makes her the real deal. I love her way.”
Clare Bowditch

“Dear Sam, I am still trying to master that Vietnamese salad you demonstrated at the Harvest Picnic.”

The Honourable John Brumby, Premier of Victoria

“I thought I knew fair bit about stretching but Samantha Gowing showed me a few things I didn’t know for which I am most grateful. She also encouraged me to push myself further than I thought possible – and I felt fantastic afterwards! I recommend a personal stretching session with Samantha for anyone serious about maintaining their body flexibility. She’s a great teacher, fun to work with and she gets results. Thanks Samantha!”

Surf Spa Food: Bali & Beyond

April 7, 2010 by Samantha

Since relocating to Byron Bay from Melbourne a few years ago I naturally had to take up surfing around the beautiful beaches to be a true local. Soon I discovered there was an incredible relationship with the organic food as medicine I have been creating for over a decade and the need for healthy, nourishing, restorative food for surfers. Not to mention a niche market which I have created my signature Surf Spa Food, formally launched at an inaugural surf retreat in May.
I was blessed to be working within the most beautiful villa I have ever had the pleasure of and surrounded by gorgeous, enthusiastic and hungry surfer girls from around the world. Daily delights such as the pictured Citrus Polenta Pancakes with a honey blossom yoghurt were a hit, so too were the Spicy Sweetheart Fishcakes and the all important post surf pick-me-up Surf Spa Food signature Bali Bliss Balls with coconut, vanilla, tamarind and tropical fruit.

Pose in Bali

Janine Hall isn’t the first mid-30s executive to decide there is more to life than a career that demands a 24/7 commitment. But she may be the first to decide the antidote to her mid-life crisis is to run off to Bali and set up a surfing and yoga retreat for women called Surf Haven Bali.

“I figured there had to be women like me who felt totally burnt out and wanted to just get away from everything and hang out with their friends,” says Hall, a New Zealander whose fashion marketing career had necessitated stints living in London, Sydney and Tokyo.

Hall had loved Bali since childhood visits, so it wasn’t difficult to pick a location. The yoga and surfing combination seemed a good fit with today’s women and with Bali, she says.

“Lots of women are really into yoga and I decided to add the surfing element because of where we are situated and also it’s a challenge that is totally refreshing,” Hall says.

She also wanted quality accommodation. “You get to a point in life where you don’t want to share bathrooms or stay in bunks.” Consequently, guests stay at two luxury four-bedroom villas at the resort in Seminyak.

Hall has employed the Australian nutritionist and award-winning restaurateur, Samantha Gowing, to design the menu with a view to using local produce and maximising health benefits. “We did surveys and found that nutrition is uppermost in our guests’ wish list,” she says.

Gowing turned the Grace Darling Hotel into one of Melbourne’s first gastro pubs during the 1990s. She now runs Gowings Food Health Wealth, a successful nutrition and well-being business in Byron Bay, as well as consulting to the spa industry, here and internationally.

The seven-day retreats each month are limited to eight women. Packages including accommodation, 15 hours of surfing tuition (with instructors trained by the Australian Surf Industry Training) daily yoga and meditation classes, three hours of spa treatments, all meals, a full-day Bali tour and airport transfers, are priced from $2311, twin share.

May 6, 2010 | Trip type: Solo travel New

I have recently returned from two weeks in Bali – one which I spent at a new surf and yoga retreat for women – Surf Haven Bali. I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect given it was new and had recently opened but from the moment I arrived at the airport to scented cold refresher towels and the smiling Retreat Director Deb, I was in heaven!
The retreat villa itself is gorgeous – its huge with loads of chill out space and the rooms are great, modern, quiet and cool. They are all spread out around the grounds so you really feel like you have your own space and privacy. It comes with alot of staff and was great to be waited on by the butlers – I felt very spoilt and pampered.

A real highlight was all the food which was amazing and the resident Chef Sam whipped up one great meal after another – would have loved more desert though! It was so much fun learning to surf with others who had never tried before either and so great to actually be able to prove to myself (and friends) that I can stand up on a board!! I am definately going to do more over summer as I LOVED it! The yoga (vinyasa flow) was fabulous and taught by an awesome women from San Fran. Coming on holiday by myself it was great to join a group. The women who run it (Jen and Deb) and the women I met were amazing and really made my experience one I will always remember – I loved my week there and would recommend it to anyone wanting some time out to get away from it all, learn to surf and do yoga and truly be looked after. I am going to return next year!!
