Samantha Gowing Turns Food Into Medicine

Clinical nutritionist and former restaurateur Samantha Gowing has turned her lifetime experience of food into an exciting venture where good food is healthful as well as delicious. Her conscious cuisine programs are available for either private home visits, in-clinic appointments , health retreat or on site Corporate Health Consulting.
Gowing is also known for her multi-award winning restaurants including Gowings Grace Darling Hotel in Collingwood. Throughout the 1990s she showcased innovative food and also some of Australia’s best acoustic performers and modern visual artists.
The breadth of understanding that combined food, wine, music and art in contemporary pub setting has enabled her to take the next step. She has taken food beyond the plate as a sensual and social experience, and turned it into a vital and healing medicine.
After 20 years in the Melbourne restaurant industry, Gowing needed a new challenge but still wanted to be involved in food. She took a fork in the road, studied Nutritional Health Science.
In April 2003 she was awarded the “Excellence in Clinical Practice” at the annual Graduation ceremony for the Melbourne College of Natural Medicine.
Gowings Food Health Wealth revolves around food for health and well being, focussing on fresh, abundant, organic and biodynamic provisions. Her passionate and extensive understanding of nutritional medicine explores the healing effects food has on the body, mind and spirit.
Gowings therapeutic menu combines the healing philosophies of the East with modern nutritional medicine to assist digestive disorders, food sensitivities and intolerances, foods for optimal wellness and healing with wholefoods.
In 2008 Samantha relocated to Byron Bay where she consults privately, hosts organic cooking classes at premier health retreats. Gowings Food Health Wealth also pioneered an exclusive Therapeutic Chef Service with Vue de Monde’s Shannon Bennett, delivering fresh, healthy and vital cuisine straight to the clients’ door.
In October 2010, Gowing returns to Sri Lanka to host a five night organic wellness retreat at the stunning boutique hotel Kahanda Kanda in Galle.
“There’s no way people are going to say ‘that tastes awful!’ with my medicine,” she says. “This is a unique holistic culinary pathway.”
